Once upon a time, I was an ardent fan of the Doors. When Oliver Stone’s biopic of Jim Morrison and his bandmates was released, I was first in line. I loved the movie and blasted the soundtrack non-stop. It was thanks to The Doors soundtrack that I discovered Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. The Velvet’s song “Heroin” was included on the album and it blew me away. Reed wrote it, of course, and sung lead, and it was lifted from their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico. The Velvets didn’t last very long, just long enough to create some killer tunes and riffs, before going their separate ways. Reed had a long, and diverse, solo career before his death in 2013. If you like a good story– a good, gritty, urban tale of life on the streets and between the sheets– you may find something to appreciate in his music as I have.
